I've never been but would really love to. Feels like an $800 pass is unnecessary and I'd rather just see smaller shows on a one-off basis - any thoughts on if that's doable and the best way to enjoy SXSW, in general?

Okay, spent a fair amount of time sifting through older SXSW threads. Sounds amazing. Small clarification: the badges are needed for big bands, but otherwise, you basically just need to get into the venue and in some cases there will be a cover, but you can stay in that venue for as many bands as you want?

Last year I created youtube channels of sxsw artists that I wanted to check out. If several of us do it and post the links here it would save all of us a lot of time. It was also useful to give to my friends so they would know what bands we were going to check out before I dragged them from venue to venue.

Parade of Lights is a pretty fun show. I saw them multiple times a few years back in a lot of small local places as I know the main guy in the band. I have no idea how they are like now but they put on a pretty good show. It's not the most memorable show you will see but there is a lot worse.

Also a couple buddies of mine from Australia have been raving about Vance Joy to me for the past 4 months or so now. I assume this is going to be his first tour in the USA but all the YouTube clips I have seen of him live have been good. I was actually going to start a thread for him to play Coachella but then I just never did.

St. Vincent
2 Chainz & Pusha T
Miley Cyrus
Sky Ferreira
Icona Pop
Deafheaven

I'm on my phone right now, will update with links later.

Speaking of which, one of the dum dum girls has a band called SISU that is playing. And their dark, shoegazey synth sound is ace. Their album and live show are better, actually.

Probably no chance of getting a cheap place to stay at this point, is there?

The Tumbleweed Wanderers are pretty rad. Met these kids outside of OSL in 2012 playing on the sidewalk, and they're really talented and incredibly humble. I will be going as usual again this year . I have been going since 2008 and never had a badge or wristband. If possible, the best bet is to stay with friends in austin if you have them, otherwise the main expense is staying somewhere. I may have paid for one or two shows last year at night, but mostly go for free.

Hype hotel had one of the best setups last year and is where I caught most of the shows I went to during the day, I saw Disclosure, CHVRCHES, Flume, !!!, Polyphonic spree, MO, austra, St. Lucia and a few others there. The Vans Mohawk showcase had Alt-J and Toro Y Moi and Austra which required getting there early but was really good. Last year was the year to see Icona Pop for free at sxsw also, they played the MAd Decent party which had tons of dj stuff going on. I met up with some friends there. The Jim James and Flaming Lips show at Auditorium Shores was good also, but super packed. The Black Lips and Deer Tick show was another $10 show I went to also at night. The last day show I saw was THee Oh Sees across the Street from Lustre Pearl which was a good closer also.

It can be overwelming for rookies, and I always bring my bike to travel around from venue to venue. Twitter is your best friend for finding out whats going on, and a portable battery charger is a must if you want to keep in contact or see whats going on. I have seen some amazing shows at sxsw with Trentemoller at La Zona Rosa, and watching NOFX while on stage at Mess With Texas party topping my favorites list also. It is the ultimate make your own adventure music festival, and it is cheap and easy to get wasted for free or near free if you tip well. My usual expenses are tipping and food trucks, otherwise I might pay for a show or 2. Even if someone is playing at Stubb's, you can usually hang outside and listen if you really want to hear it, but odds are you can find a show in a small venue worth checking out.

I could keep rambling, but may chime in later if anyone needs any questions answered. I have never had to book a hotel, but I can't drive back to anywhere this year if I am out partying. I am just lucky to have a friend off 7th street 4 blocks off I-35 in the middle of everything. It makes it easy to just getup and go. My friend is also a homebrewer who know opened a meadery, so getting smashed is usually part of the plan. Just need to make sure I remember it next time I party to oblivion. It is one hell of an endurance test riding a bike around for 4 days getting smashed, but oh so much fun.

You never know what band will be playing as you are walking down the street going somewhere. You just have to go with the flow.

A lot of venues will let you in without a badge/wristband in the evening for $5 or $10 bucks - but it'd get expensive to venue hop. Best just pick one place with a decent lineup and get there early.

Regarding the Phantogram show at the mohawk, get there early. I made it into Alt-J, Toro Y Moi, and Austra last year with no issues, but had to get there early. There was a lot of distractions going on at the time, but it was at capacity when my friend tried to make it in an hour or so later. Glad I saw Alt-J there, i didn't feel like paying $80 on stubhub for their Dallas show.

Night shows at the mohawk will most like be badges only with wristband people getting in occasionally.

A main rule of sxsw is, if they say badges or wristbands only from a certain point at night. Move on. There is plenty more to do than be hopeful when you won't make it in. You can listen to a lot of shows from outside of venues though.

Or possibly Big Boi and Phantogram.

Hype Hotel usually snags the best line-ups. That's where I saw Disclosure, Chvrches, !!!, Flume, Fidlar, Polyphonic Spree, MØ, Austra and a few other bands last year. It is the only time I have had the Doritos Locos tacos ever. I was hungry and did not want to leave. They had free miller light, tito's vodka and maple crown (terrible) I think. I would rather eat at food trucks, it's usually the only major expense of sxsw since I crash at my friends place.

Man, that Death Match party looks fantastic.

For got to RSVP for spin and it closed. It wouldn't load on my phone. Warpaint, cloud nothings, Against Me and a few others. Was an rsvp needed to get in? I forgot.

Do you generally need to RSVP for most of these showcases/parties in order to get in? I keep hearing SXSW isn't that organized in that regard...

For some of the most wanted day parties like Fader Fort you definitely need RSVP, but smaller ones not so much. In my experience a lot of them seem to check lists earlier in the day, but as things get more hectic it just become one in one out regardless of rsvp. At night, you can sometimes pay a small cover to get into showcases without a wristband if there's room...paid $5 to see Azari and III at a showcase last year.

Hype hotel, Fader and the Spin party are usually mandatory rsvp's that require waiting in line for a wristband. It is tough to say what other ones will be checking them, but I am pretty sure the spin party requires it. The good thing is that there are tons of options if you miss out on that. The hype rsvp usually doesn't close, but Fader usually does. Do it now if you are considering.

I won a free membership to atxshhh.com which does a good job of throwing together the free parties for easy viewing and schedule building. It contains links to most of the rsvp's and is normally $5 if you don't feel like scavenging for every line-up out there. Its worthwhile if your time is money.

Also, I know the Sailor Jerry parties haven't been announced yet… but I was looking at the schedule from 2013 and it looks like all their parties, including the evening ones, are free. Is that true? If so, how early do you have to get there? Their line up's from last year were pretty ace.

In the past the Sailor parties have been free, but they do put a limit on the free booze. One year we went the first day and they said they capped the free booze (for all days) at about $5000. So from noon to about 2:30 people drank for free and then they cut it off. I've never had a problem getting into any of their shows.

This is incomplete, but what I have for Thursday so far. I haven't gotten to the showcases at night yet. I'm mostly going to check out bands I haven't seen before so I'll probably go to the New Shapes Party to see Wolf Alice, Jungle, Panama Wedding, Great Good Fine Ok, and Preatures or maybe the Pitchfork day party. The Stereogum and Thrasher parties have a lot of good bands you probably already have seen. The Brew Exchange lineup is really good if you are looking for a dance party. Same with the Binary Records Party at Javelina, but it's a small bar so there might not be much room for dancing. Ringo Deathstarr is a shoegaze Austin band that's pretty good. They are playing at Guero's, but it's not near downtown.

It sucks I have 14 vacation days, but can't take this week off.

I do plan on seeing St. vincent friday, and have tickets for Warpaint, Trust and Phantogram in Dallas. But still, sxsw is too much fun.

Amazing (http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/267-how-many-hours-does-it-take-to-become-jaded-at-sxsw/):

When I told security I was there with my photographer to cover the show, they repeatedly told me there was no press list ("We even turned away the New York Times!"), while they continued to let in people who flashed their exorbitantly expensive “SXXpress Passes”. Our photographer tried his luck around another door, where I had the uncanny and instantly disillusioning experience of learning that security was now bragging to other journalists about having turned me away. “We didn’t even let in that girl from Pitchfork!” one of them said.

They block off 6th street but Mohawk is off of 9th and red river. There are just too many venues with shows going on to block off every street.

edit: looks like the street was closed off. guy was reported to be going over 70mph.

Police held a conference about the incident last night. Apparently it started out as DWI stop, driver then fled the wrong way down a one way street and hit pedestrians. Final number was 2 killed and 23 injured. Driver is facing 2 counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle. Capital murder can get you the death penalty. Regardless, this guy is going away for a long time.

I agree. Just look at this....

Here are some quick and scary facts:

Alcohol is involved in about 40% of all fatal car crashes.
Drivers with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of only 0.02 to 0.05 % are 7 times more likely to die in a crash than sober drivers.
Drivers with a BAC of 0.20% are 90 times more likely to die in a crash than sober drivers.
Alcohol-related crashes in the U.S. cost about $51 billion each year.
Male drivers are twice as likely as female drivers to be involved in a DUI crash with a BAC of 0.08% or greater.
Usually 30% of all fatal crashes on a weekday had alcohol involved, compared to 52% on weekends.

Are you a complete moron? The police were trying to keep drunk drivers off the road. Sure, arguments can be made about the ineffectiveness of DUI checkpoints but your answer to over-regulation is.... more regulation and big-brother oversight? The cost of installing a device like that on every car on the road would be absolutely insane and even if you had the money to do it, getting it done would be near impossible.
This is such sad news though. These people were probably looking forward to this festival all year like we look forward to Coachella. How terrible and unfair life can be sometimes.

Uh no. The blame falls squarely on the driver, don't try to spin this as the fault of law enforcement for merely doing their job to ensure patrons stay safe.
